MISSIONS TO CHINA
Our China Link
Our link with China began in 2008 when two of our
congregation, Peter and Judy Sibley went out
to spend just over a year in Kunming, the
capital of Yunnan
Province. They were
teaching English. Peter was also doing some low-tech engineering work on a
water purification project, as well as learning about keeping Chinese bees,
both of which can greatly benefit poorer communities. They may return to Kunming for a while next
year.
The Church in China:
The Church in China has two main strands - the government sponsored "Three-self" Church (self-governing, self-financing and self-propagating i.e. no foreign input or support) and the underground churches which are growing rapidly in spite of official opposition and police interference. Chinese Christians put us to shame by their enthusiastic and effective evangelism, in spite of the risk of being arrested or blacklisted by the authorities. Many are in prison or have suffered financial loss. Rapid growth has led to a shortage of mature leaders and teachers and there is a huge need to train young leaders, particularly in their understanding of the Bible and to provide Christian literature for them.
The Chinese church has a vision of sending missionaries to Muslim countries but they do not have the long experience of mission sending which we have in this country. The prospective missionaries need to be trained and to learn English as a tool for learning other languages and this is where the church in the West can particularly help.
If you would like further details about China and how you could get involved through prayer or being a volunteer, then do speak to Peter and Judy Sibley.
